In the video for “Dancing Through rhe Wreckage,” Pat Benatar stands strong against an often stark background, as she sings about coming through a challenge stronger than ever. The power ballad, written by Linda Perry, Neil Giraldo and Benatar, is the end title theme for Served Like a Girl, a searing documentary directed by Lysa Heslov that follows female military vets as they compete in the Ms. Veteran America contest to raise awareness for the plight of the 55,000 homeless female veterans in the United States — a statistic that spools across the screen in the video, exclusively premiering on Billboard.
In the black and white and then color video, directed by Kii Arens, Benatar’s performance is interspersed with clips of women in the military, proudly serving their country, as well as footage from the documentary.
“‘Dancing Through the Wreckage’ is a powerful and inspirational song written for the female veterans in the documentary Served Like a Girl. The film’s ability to showcase the hope and courage from these women sparked this song and their message is one that must not go unheard,” Benatar said in a statement.
Served Like a Girl, distributed through Entertainment Studios, opened theatrically in New York and Los Angeles on Aug. 25, and is rolling out into other markets.
“Dancing Through the Wreckage” is the first single from film’s soundtrack, released on Perry’s We Are Hear label. The album also includes new songs from Pink, Gwen Stefani, Christina Aguilera and Natasha Bedingfield.
